Sublative Skin Resurfacing is quickly gaining popularity. Known as RF fractional resurfacing or sublative rejuvenation, and powered by elōs Technology, this procedure uses fractionated bipolar radio frequency technology to penetrate the outer layers of the dermis and treat (deliver heat) to the lower layers of skin (dermis) for better results and less downtime. Significant dermal impact can be produced with minimal epidermal disruption. One of the leading brands of this type of procedure is the eMax skin rejuvenation system by Syneron, which uses RF-only fractional technology that offers a wide range of benefits to patients.
Sublative RF skin resurfacing is very different from other types of skin resurfacing techniques in that most treatments work at the surface of the skin, removing the outer skin layers to reveal smoother, softer skin underneath. Unfortunately, the process also involves a significant amount of discomfort and downtime before the dramatic results are revealed after the skin heals completely. With radio frequency treatments, the energy waves penetrate the surface of the skin with minimal disruption to the surface of the skin, treating (delivering heat) the dermal layer below. The body’s natural healing response is activated, and collagen production is stimulated, resulting in skin that is smoother, softer and younger looking. Because there is minimal disruption to the outer skin layer, downtime is minimal. Side effects are typically limited to redness, irritation and skin crusting that typically accompany other skin rejuvenation treatments. Like other types of skin rejuvenation treatments, eMax skin rejuvenation can be customized to a patient's unique needs and skin type.
One of the most attractive features of the eMax Sublative Skin Resurfacing procedure is that it can be used on just about any skin type. In the past, darker skin tones did not see the kind of results in skin rejuvenation that lighter-skinned patients enjoyed. However, eMax by Syneron uses colorblind technology that works equally effectively on just about any skin tone and color.

How is Revitalize Sublative Skin Resurfacing (Beyond Fraxel!) Different?
Sublative Skin Resurfacing (Beyond Fraxel!) Treatment Preparation
During the consultation, your Revitalize Laser and Aesthetics Clinic Medical Aesthetics Team Member will closely examine your skin. The success of any cosmetic procedure depends on effectively evaluating the skin.
If sublative skin resurfacing will diminish the signs of aging that concern you and is appropriate for you, your Revitalize Laser and Aesthetics Clinic Medical Aesthetics Team Member will tell you what can be expected, the number of treatments needed, and potential side effects.
Between the consultation and your treatments, it is important to protect your skin from the sun and avoid tanning. Sublative skin resurfacing cannot be performed on tan or sunburned skin, or anyone who has had fillers in the 6 months prior to your first treatment. If the Revitalize Laser and Aesthetics Clinic Medical Aesthetics Team Member feels that your skin is too tanned or sunburned to proceed, your treatment will be rescheduled.
Sublative Skin Resurfacing (Beyond Fraxel!) Treatment Process
When you arrive at Revitalize Laser and Aesthetics Clinic for your sublative skin resurfacing treatment, before each treatment, you will be asked several short questions about your sun exposure, health status, medication changes, previous treatments (particularly any adverse reactions) and upcoming events.
Although this may seem repetitive, it is necessary to make sure nothing has changed that would cause an unsafe or ineffective treatment. Prior to treatment, you may be asked to cleanse the area being treated with cleanser and water to remove oils and makeup, if applicable. A topical anesthetic may be applied to your skin to reduce any discomfort during treatment, especially if the area being treated is very sensitive or large. Most topical anesthetics require 30 to 60 minutes to work. Don't apply topical anesthetic on your own.
During the procedure the Revitalize Laser and Aesthetics Clinic Medical Aesthetics Team member will press the FDA approved Syneron eMax hand-held applicator to your skin. The applicator is fired. Energy is released. By using RF sublation, fractionated bipolar radiofrequency technology delivers heat deep into the dermis. This heat injures the skin, which causes the body to begin healing the injured skin. The intense heat from the laser beam damages the collagen, prompting the body to respond by creating new collagen. Each pulse of the applicator an area approximately the size a quarter. After the treatment, ice packs may be applied to reduce the swelling and discomfort.
How long this procedure lasts depends on the size of the treated area.
Post Sublative Skin Resurfacing (Beyond Fraxel!) Treatment Guidelines
You may notice some redness and swelling for the first few hours after your sublative skin resurfacing procedure, but skin resurfacing generally does not require downtime, and you will not have a visible wound. The treated skin will likely be red and swollen for a few hours. A stinging sensation may linger for a day or two. But you can return to normal activities as long as the activities do not require any physical exertion for 24 hours.
The Revitalize Laser and Aesthetics Clinic Medical Aesthetics Team Member who performs your treatment will give you post-treatment instructions. Emphasis will be placed on how to protect your skin from sunlight and other bright light. Sun exposure after sublative skin resurfacing treatment can be very painful and result in complications. While you're healing from sublative skin resurfacing, you will be instructed to keep the affected skin clean. You will be advised to use a post-treatment kit by Obagi or SkinMedica. Avoid vigorously scrubbing the affected skin or picking at it. It's also important to avoid sun exposure — both natural sunlight and tanning beds — for at least one week after treatment. After this period, use sunscreen whenever you're in the sun. Not following the Revitalize Laser and Aesthetics Clinic Medical Aesthetics Team Member’s instructions increases the risk of developing side effects such as scarring, skin discoloration, the appearance of spider veins or other complications. Following your Revitalize Laser and Aesthetics Clinic Medical Aesthetics Team Member’s instructions also will help you see the best possible results.
Typically, the procedure only takes 15-30 minutes depending on the area being rejuvenated, meaning many patients can schedule a sublative skin rejuvenation treatment on their lunch break. After a sublative skin rejuvenation session, the affected area might appear red for 1 to 3 days. Patients can expect to resume their regular daily activities after a visit to a certified skin rejuvenation clinic. For the best results, patients should set up a series of 3-5 Laser Skin Rejuvenation treatments, spanned over 4 week intervals.
If Sublative Skin Rejuvenation sounds like the wrinkle and acne scarring removal treatment you've been looking for, we can arrange a free consultation with a Revitalize Laser and Aesthetics Clinic skincare specialist who can answer any questions you may have regarding the treatment and help you get started.
Sublative Skin Resurfacing (Beyond Fraxel!) FAQ
Why Sublative Rejuvenation™?
Evolution of Sublative Rejuvenation New Treatment introduced Summer 2009! For decades laser and light based procedures have been the recommended solution in correcting all kinds of skin imperfections such as wrinkles, scars, discolorations, sun damage etc. Cosmetic treatments became more socially accepted when skin rejuvenation, a low-level light therapy to non-aggressively treat superficial skin conditions, was introduced in 2001. This treatment required multiple treatment sessions, and results were gradual--but there was little to no downtime per treatment. Then in 2004 the plastic surgery movement began and people began to demand faster and more comprehensive results, like the kind you get with face lifts. At this point, fractionated laser therapies were introduced, and although considered non-surgical, these were aggressive treatments that still required weeks of downtime. More importantly, these treatments were not recommended for all skin types due to possible complications. Today to fill the void between non-aggressive and aggressive while providing a safe and effective treatment for ALL skin types a brand new treatment called Sublative Rejuvenation is introduced in the Summer of 2009.
What is Sublative Rejuvenation?
FDA-cleared Sublative Rejuvenation using eMatrix is truly a unique procedure because it's the first to combine the results you can get with aggressive treatments--with no downtime. The secret to Sublative Rejuvenation is the energy used and how the energy is delivered through the skin.
How does Sublative Rejuvenation work?
To achieve the best possible results, the energy, whether laser or light, must be delivered below the skin without overheating the top layer of the skin. This has been the challenge with other more aggressive treatments because they work by overheating the top layer of the skin to the point of complete ablation (removal), forcing new skin to develop. Sublative Rejuvenation uses fractionated bi-polar radio frequency to penetrate through the skin--sending more energy beneath the surface of the skin to really maximize collagen production--while keeping the top layer of the skin intact. This is an important factor in why it's safe for all skin types.
What are the Benefits of Sublative Rejuvenation?
• Sublative Rejuvenation is clinically proven to treat fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars and stretch marks, textural irregularities caused by excessive sun exposure, and skin tightening. • Little to no downtime post-treatment - patients can return to regular activities following treatment. • Sublative Rejuvenation is the "all-natural" approach to enhancing your youthfulness. Unlike other non-aggressive cosmetic treatments such as Botox, fillers, or chemical peels, Sublative Rejuvenation works from the inside out by stimulating cell regrowth. Thus results with Sublative Rejuvenation last longer and can be further enhanced with yearly maintenance treatments. • A full-face treatment session takes less than 20 minutes. • Proven safe and effective on ALL skin types and degrees of pigmentation.
What makes Sublative Rejuvenation different from other aggressive fractional dev
Patients today desire face-lift-type results, yet do not want the weeks--to even months--of downtime associated with those treatments. Aggressive treatments also come with limitations on the range of skin types that can be treated, due to the high risk of skin discoloration. Although classified as an aggressive treatment, Sublative Rejuvenation is unique because it delivers optimal efficiency with minimal downtime at an affordable price point--and it's safe for ALL skin types.
How does Sublative Rejuvenation using eMatrix work?
To achieve the best possible results when addressing any skin imperfection, the energy, whether it be laser or light, must be delivered below the skin without overheating the top layer of the skin. This has been the challenge with current more aggressive treatments, because they work by overheating the top layer of the skin to the point of complete ablation (removal), forcing new skin to develop. Sublative Rejuvenation uses fractional bi-polar radio frequency to penetrate through the skin--to allow more energy beneath the surface of the skin, to really maximize collagen production--while keeping the top layer of the skin intact. Post treatment, you may notice increased levels of beneficial collagen as new healthy skin cells are produced. Mild to moderate wrinkles and superficial skin discolorations are reduced, and the texture of your skin becomes smoother and more elastic.
How many treatments do I need?
Each patient's treatment protocol will vary based on individual needs and results desired. Most patients will receive three treatments, each spaced four to six weeks apart
When can I expect to see results?
Patients will begin to see results after the first treatment and results will continue to improve up to one year post treatment. Because this treatment works to rebuild collagen, there are no limitations on how long the results last. Maintenance treatments are recommended post one year to maintain and further enhance current results.
Does it hurt?
Unlike other aggressive fractional treatments, Sublative Rejuvenation with eMatrix is very tolerable. During treatment, many patients feel a warm, prickly sensation. After treatment, a pink or red “sunburn” appearance and feeling is common. Topical anesthetic ointments and cooling can be used to reduce unpleasant sensations during treatment.
Are there any side effects?
No clinical side effects have been reported to date. The beauty about Sublative Rejuvenation is its capability to offer significant results to ALL skin types with little to no downtime.
Is everyone a good candidate for Sublative Rejuvenation?
Sublative Rejuvenation is the only fractional treatment that can be used on all skin types. Some skin conditions (such as eczema) may prohibit patients from receiving the treatment. Consult your skin care specialist to determine if Sublative Rejuvenation is right for you.
How much does it cost?
Treatment costs vary. Schedule a personalized consultation for more details.
