Are you looking for a non-surgical way to rejuvenate your skin without any downtime? If so, you may want to consider microdermabrasion. This minimally resurfacing procedure gently exfoliates the outer layer of skin, removing the thicker, uneven outer layer revealing skin that is more radiant, smoother, and more even in tone.
This type of skin rejuvenation is used to treat uneven skin tone or texture (such as large pores), sun damage, age spots and patches of darker skin, light or shallow scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, mild acne scarring, discoloration (including hyper-pigmentation), and there's even microdermabrasion for stretch marks.
The microdermabrasion procedure performed at Revitalize Laser & Aesthetics may be used to treat signs of aging on the face, neck, chest, and hands, among others. It causes virtually no downtime and patients can usually return to their regular activities the same day. In fact, some call microdermabrasion a lunchtime peel. Convenience and minimal recovery period account for much of the popularity of microdermabrasion.
How is Revitalize Microdermabrasion Different?
Microdermabrasion Treatment Preparation
Microdermabrasion Treatment Process
Microdermabrasion treatments make use of a minimally abrasive device that gently sands the skin by spraying tiny crystals across the treatment area, sloughing off the top dead layer (epidermis) of your skin while simultaneously removing the dead layer of skin via suction. In essence, it is a mild-to-moderate mechanical peel performed using a stream of fine crystals. This process stimulates new skin growth and new collagen, which results in a younger looking complexion. Collagen is a protein in your skin that's plentiful when you're a child and makes skin appear taut and smooth. Collagen, which acts as a supporting structure for our skin, diminishes as we get older, resulting in looser, uneven skin.
As with other skin rejuvenation techniques, more than one treatment will most likely be needed to reduce or remove fine wrinkles and unwanted pigmentation. Most people report smoother-feeling skin and a more radiant complexion. Because microdermabrasion does not deeply penetrate the skin, it cannot produce the results seen after a skin resurfacing procedure that penetrates more deeply such as laser skin resurfacing. Makeup may be easier to apply.
Post Microdermabrasion Treatment Guidelines
How does microdermabrasion work?
Think of microdermabrasion like a "superficial skin polishing" that doesn't hurt. The Diamond tip skin exfoliator loosens the dead skin on the surface while the medicated fluid is sprayed at an angle to your skin. The result is sloughing of dead skin leaving smooth, shiny, hydrated skin. Microdermabrasion promotes both deep skin tissue and collagen rejuvenation while infusing hydrating fluid into your skin. This further promotes vibrant, youthful looking skin while minimizing fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, and age spots.
What does microdermabrasion treat?
Microdermabrasion treats many signs of prematurely aging skin including fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, acne scars, chicken pox scars, and enlarged pores. It decreases the appearance of large pores and can help uneven skin pigmentation. Microdermabrasion gets rid of dull, lackluster skin giving you a more youthful appearance.
What are microdermabrasion treatments like?
Microdermabrasion treatments last less than an hour and are performed in our office. Our Aesthetician will clean your treatment area and then will use a jet of medicated fluid mixed with sterile diamond tip technology to gently exfoliate your skin. No anesthesia is needed. Pressure is adjusted for your skin's needs. The Microdermabrasion machine's hand piece is moved across the treatment area delivering a precise stream of fluid onto the skin's surface; the sloughed off skin cells are then suctioned off to reveal a fresh, vibrant skin surface. After your treatment, you can resume your normal activities immediately.
Does it hurt and what can go wrong?
Because Microdermabrasion is non-invasive it has a low risk of complications and is one of the safest rejuvenation procedures available. Rarely, the procedure can carry the potential risks of hyperpigmentation, perforation, bleeding, and infection. Most people do have varying degrees of redness of their skin after a treatment. Some people should not have Microdermabrasion and should notify their aesthetician if they have undiagnosed skin lesions, recent herpes outbreaks, warts, stage 3 or 4 acne, active rosacea, unstable diabetes or auto-immune disorders.
What should I expect from microdermabrasion treatment?
The procedure is non-invasive and requires no recovery time, though some skin may remain red for up to 24 hours after the treatment. After the first treatment the skin will have a fresh, radiant glow. Fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots become greatly diminished, and many patients report that their skin seems to be softer, smoother and younger looking. Improvement continues throughout the treatment program, and you'll begin to notice visible results after the third treatment. For more information about Microdermabrasion, we encourage you to call to schedule an in-office consultation.
What can I expect during the procedure?
The procedure is quite simple and produces significant results. Crystals are projected onto the skin under pressure; the stream of micro-crystals cleanses the surface. It is very much like "sand papering" the skin's surface, in a very uniform manner. A mild suction vacuums away the dead outer layer of the skin through an attached hand piece. After just one treatment, your skin will have a fresh pink glow. You will see improvement with each treatment! The treatment takes about an hour with little or no discomfort. Since there are no harsh chemicals or anesthetics used in this technique, one has no down time. You can return to work or social activities immediately.
How often should I have microdermabrasion?
For optimum results, it is recommended that 4 to 6 treatments be performed about 14 days apart. Having a microdermabrasion performed on a monthly or bi-monthly schedule is a great way to maintain clean, healthy skin.
Are there any side effects of microdermabrasion?
Possible side effects of Microdermabrasion are minimal and are temporary. Depending on sensitivity, the skin may have some puffiness and redness immediately after the procedure. These effects are greatly reduced or completely gone within a few hours. Microdermabrasion is not recommended for people who have Rosacea or facial redness and/or broken capillaries of the face.
Is there a way to make microdermabrasion more effective?
At Revitalize Laser and Aesthetics Clinic, we customize every microdermabrasion based on the particular needs of the patient. Some patients need a glycolic or other light chemical peel; others may require a specific type of mask. These treatments will help enhance the effectiveness of the procedure giving you better, longer lasting results. Only a trained aesthetician can determine what your specific needs are.
What results can I expect?
After your first treatment your skin will have a fresh pink glow and a smoother texture. Depending on the areas treated, you will notice an improvement in your skin’s texture and appearance. Skin imperfections such as fine lines and wrinkles, stretch marks, acne scars and age spots will be reduced and less obvious. Your skin will feel smoother and softer, and look younger. Improvements will continue throughout your treatment program.
